I'm a Sucker for Deceptively Delicious

Hiding things from your dog's medication in kibble to apples in pancakes is a concept older than time, but Jessica Seinfeld has hit the jackpot with her new book Deceptively Delicious, and yes, I am a sucker because she is Jerry Seinfeld's wife. There. I said it.

SusieJ managed to score a copy for review, and now the book is selling like hotcakes (with pureed spinach) and nary a copy is to be found according to an article in Friday's Wall Street Journal called "How another Seinfeld scored her own big hit". I even missed her on Oprah. The New York Times also a recent story on Jessica's book which unlike the WSJ article can be read here - the jist is just about the same.

If you can't get your hands on JS's book, here are some other recommendations (some I own, some are pure wishlist) including the books, like The Sneaky Chef (p.s. visit the author's blog), mentioned in the Journal and NYT articles.

And then there's a whole other debate going on at What's Cooking. Maybe if we involved our children from seed to harvest in the growing process, we wouldn't need to be deceptive at all.

Jessica Sklar Nederlander Seinfeld has always been good at hiding things. Now its her kids' food; just a few years ago it was the fact she was engaged and became married when she started having an affair with Jerry Seinfeld. Yes, she's a pro at being deceptively delicious.

Yes, I am aware of Jessica's past. She has now been married to Jerry for over eight years and they have three children. I do not know the personal circumstances of her affair (heck, I don't know anything of substance about Jessica) and certainly there are things in life that are unforgivable, but I believe in second chances.

Oh, please! let the kiddies and everyone else know what is in the food you are serving! and if they don't like it...well.. then.....don't eat!!!

Those Brownies with the spinach... Doesn't that remind you of a different brownie from college with different green things?

And about Jessica's character. I read her book, and thought, hmmm, so she has a hired chef to help her. Then I watched her in action on Oprah (I watched only because of her, and the book review I'm to write), and I have to say. She is doing this herself, because she is truly worried, stay-up-at-night thinking about her kid's health. She truly seems to be dedicated to doing this for the kids. I liked her.

We feed our kids what we eat. No special dinners or "kid-food" with hidden ingredients. If we eat salmon and green beans, they eat it too. Sometimes we all have chocolate-chip pancakes for dinner. It all balances out.

Our kids eat pretty much what we do - we have one option as an out and that is a peanut butter sandwich. I figure since they don't get to choose what we have each night, it's only fair they get the option of a tried and true favorite! :)

Thanks for referring folks to the discussion on my What's Cooking Blog :-) Including kids in the cooking process is certainly an option worth considering...

I just found another interesting article in the New York Times:

Thanks again for the link!

ps. I love your efforts to help make families more green :-) We do the same, especially with waste-free-lunches!

Hi Amy. Interesting post. I'm a sucker for most cookbooks. My kids have always had to eat what the rest of us are having and it's worked out okay--they're pretty healthy eaters.

I'm really enjoying this book. At least half the recipes I've tried so far do not taste like a squash.

Thanks for stopping by, Michelle. I'll recut and paste the link into my blog - I think part of it was cut off in the comments section!

We're trying but sometimes we revert to our old un-green ways! :)

Miss Kitty, I'll be coming to your house for dinner. Thank you.
